If you’re going to spend a weekend in the beautiful but still not well known Luxembourg city, you cannot absolutely miss the charming quarter called Grund. If you don’t know what we’re talking about, we’re here to clarify everything: the Grund is one of the five districts of the city; in particular, it is the one situated along the Alzette river, in the lower part of the city. It corresponds to the valley that divides the old town centre from the more modern quarters and it was declared “World Heritage site” by the Unesco. But let’s start from the beginning…. While walking along the old town walls, you will notice from the panoramic viewpoints that, in the lower part of the city, there are several picturesque houses surrounded by a lot of vegetation and nice paths that run along the Alzette. And this is exactly the area that we want to describe in our post. To get there you’ll take a modern public lift that you’ll find in rue Saint Esprit: it will take you directly in the Grund from the modern part of the city; it will be like a travel in time or a dive into the past, and you will get into a little earthly paradise. Even if it will seem like a dream, we can guarantee that the great view that you will discover is real. Ancient buildings dating back to the XIVth century, picturesque breath-taking views, a great and luxuriant vegetation and, last but not least, nice people: all that will encourage you to stay in this beautiful city for the rest of your life. We warmly suggest to take a camera, especially for the sunny days: the area could be more charming than usual and walking along the river banks will be very pleasant. And if during the day the Grund is one of the most peaceful place in the city, during the night it becomes the hearth of the city nightlife with its many restaurants, pubs and clubs! If you want some examples, we can suggest the “Kamakura”, the best Japanese restaurant of the city, the “Coco Mango”, perfect for a nice happy hour and a picturesque view of the city (it is situated at the eight floor of the Sofitel), or one of the many pubs like the “Oscar Wilde”, which is an Irish pub, or the “Scottish pub”. So the Grund is a great mix of many different things: a great architecture, history, culture, but also entertainment and nightlife. We’ve experimented all these aspects, so now it’s your turn: which one will you choose?
