Edinburgh, the Scottish capital well-known all over the world for its castles, its nature, its kilts and bagpipes, is much more than this...It sounds weird to associate the Scottish city to the beach but we can assure that when you’ll be in Portobello, you’ll forget to be in Scotland. So in this post we want to deal with Portobello Beach, one of the less known quarters of the city, usually not that popular among tourists. In fact, it’s really worth a visit! Just 5km away from the city centre, on the East side of the city, you’ll find this nice quarter and, of course, the Ocean, along the coast also known as Firth of Forth. Just 20 minutes far from the centre by bus, you’ll find a unique atmosphere: white sand, terraced houses, the seafront with all its little old-style shops, cafes, fish and chips shops and cocktail bars where to rest after a great walk along the promenade, or directly on the shore, and to admire a wonderful sunset, while listening to the street musicians that you can often find along the boardwalk. That’s the essence of Portobello Beach, the favourite destinations of young Scottish people and families, especially during the weekend and in summer. You won’t find this destination on travel guides, but we strongly recommend this lovely place: the rough sea, a light sea mist and the smell of the ocean recreate a melancholic but charming Nordic atmosphere that you cannot miss! So let’s take the bus from the city centre and enjoy this little paradise! If you need further information about the quarter, restaurants, cafes and events, just have a look at this nice website where you’ll find useful information about everything you’ll need!
