In poche parole? "My Fair lady" vi dice qualcosa?
Ok, this time we’re not dealing with something outside the most touristic paths, but we couldn’t avoid to dedicate one of our posts to one of London’s most characteristic places: Covent Garden. So we’re sure that this time you will forgive us and you’ll be fascinated by the unique underground charm of the place. If you’ve never been there, this post is exactly what you need; so let’s follow our tips if you want to discover the most characteristic corners of the traditional “Covent Garden Apple Market”. What are we talking about? First of all, you should absolutely now that this is one of the most unconventional and artistic areas in London. Here you can find some of the most important theatres of the city, several art galleries, many modern and innovative clubs and, last but not least, the best stores for alternative shopping. So now, just close your eyes and imagine a magical place, in the middle of the main square of the quarter… it seems to be taken from a fairy tales book with all its shapes and colours: a sort of gallery (but also a market) designed around 1631 by the famous architect Indigo Jones. Since then, it still maintains its aspect untouched: it is divided into two floors by its arcades, where you will find any kind of stalls with unique creations and souvenirs. Moreover, we are sure that the several unique cafés and restaurants that you will find there will seduce you. This is the “Covent Garden Apple Market”…this, and much more than this! A heap of cheerfulness, chaos and fantasy. Once well-known all over Europe as one of the biggest fruit and vegetable markets (nowadays this market takes place along the river Thames shores, at Nine Elms), this magic location has been also the background of many films and plays. For example in “My Fair Lady”, one of the first scenes where Audrey Hepburn plays the role of the poor flower girl was filmed there. Nowadays, instead of the stalls selling fruit, vegetables and flowers, you will find tourists looking for unique souvenirs, street artists and a great variety of colours, sensations and scents. So even if we usually try to avoid the most crowded and touristic places, an exception can be done this time, because you should go to Covent Garden at least once during your life. And when you will have enough of the crowd, we suggest to walk away from the main square and to have a look at the typical narrow streets of the quarter, like Neil Street, Long Acre and James Street. There you will find several boutiques in perfect pop style, “Stanford” and its ancient maps – it is one of the most ancient travel bookshops in London, and many pubs, which were fundamental parts of London musical history. So you will have a great range of options; and now, what are you waiting for? Covent Garden is waiting for you
